A mirrorless mirror.
A friend of mine who is all things great, (I’ll call her Cubbyholes) put up a post about a beautiful mosaic tray she made, and I fairly jumped out of my seat to find my own unfinished mosaic mirror frame. The difference between Cubbyholes and me is that SHE finishes her projects. I finish most of my projects. And now she’s motivated me to finish THIS one.

The frame is just an old frame, and the pieces were like hers, yard sale and Goodwill finds. If I looked carefully I would see some of my own ceramics that met an early demise.

I need to Dremel down the sharp edges even more, and perhaps apply a thinner layer of mastic on top of what is there. I read somewhere you can paint mastic with acrylic and/or glue tinier ceramic pieces to fill it in more. I’ll be lucky just to get the mirror in.
Did you ever see the movie How To Make An American Quilt? There’s a wall in it somewhere that one of the quilters has glued all the pieces of her broken china, I believe thrown at her husband in fits of rage, onto it. I always loved that wall, though this frame is as close to that wall as I’ll ever get. This is more time-consuming than you think, and I appreciate all Cubbyholes‘ work in her beautiful tray.

We are expecting rain (and the end of the world) here in Florida this weekend. I doubt either will happen, but if it does rain and I have some indoor time awaiting me, I’m heading to Lowes because they will cut a mirror to size (at least they used to) and perhaps I can get this project up and over with. I’ll take more pictures when I do.

If you find china at any kind of yardsale, flea market, etc… do NOT tell them you are going to break it up for doing mosaics. OMG! I had one lady fit to be tied that I bought her china when I was going to break it. It’s a funny thing…they are selling it because THEY don’t want it, like it, going to use it…but soon as they find out you are going to break it to use it, suddenly its a priceless heirloom and museum quality worth 100 times what they are asking for it. It’s happened more than once and with the plates I used for this tray. Just say yes, I collect plates (which is not strictyly a lie since you ARE collecting them 😉 ) and smile and say thanks for the additions. giggles.

How unique! I love the idea of using old, broken but loved ceramics in a picture frame. I have a tea pot that is cracked that I refuse to throw away, I loved it so much. Finding a few complimentary bits at thrift shop would be easy too. 🙂
