At first I didn’t like the colors, or the lack of them.  There seemed to be only two or three, until I started painting. This was an easy sketch, and even easier watercolor.

The journal pages are so small, nothing takes very long.  I like this aspect, but wish I had better control over the pages while painting.  I hold it down with one hand and paint with the other.  Normally I would paint with my right hand and have a rag or tissue in my left.  I’m sure I’ll get used on-the-fly way of painting – pun intended.

Patsye! Would a bulldog clip on the page edge help keep your journal pages flat?

  2. Maybe it is time for you to start painting on stretched watercolour pads. You can also buy watercolour sheets and cut them up… if you aren’t painting too wet you can just tape them down with masking tape to a board. Paper in the sketch books aren’t heavy enough for you to get a good watercolour. They are designed more for ink and washes.

Hi Ruth: This is watercolor paper by Fabriano, and I did cut it up for these sheets. It’s the colors called for that didn’t provide enough contrast, but I’m not really unhappy with it. Patsye
